The University of Kentucky went into familiar territory to pick up its second known commitment of the 2010 recruiting class. LaGrange (Ga.) kicker/punter Joe Mansour gave the UK coaching staff his verbal pledge on Monday night, according to LaGrange Coach Steve Pardue.

Southeastern Conference basketball coaches are eager to insist better days are coming for the league. Speaking during the league's annual summer teleconference Monday morning, they pounded home the talking point that the SEC had pushed six teams into the NCAA Tournament in eight of the 10 years before the forgettable 2008-09 season.

University of Kentucky defensive coordinator Steve Brown has quietly orchestrated a nice little climb up the charts for a unit that had been maligned for most of the past decade. The Wildcats were 118th in total defense when Brown took over in 2007. That number climbed to 67th following his first year and 40th in 2008. After being 99th in scoring defense before Brown took the reigns, the Cats finished 35th last fall.

Kentucky’s incoming freshmen have brought an attitude to the Wildcats that has coach John Calipari excited.

“I love what they all come with. They come with the attitude that, ‘Let’s try to win all the games.’ At Memphis we brought in one crew like that said, ‘Let’s win them all,’ and they convinced our returning players,” said Calipari Monday during the Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference.
